Cacao is not just a food, it’s a superfood. -David Wolfe
You’ll be glad to know that chocolate is good for you! It is one way you can lead a healthier lifestyle. There may be some confusion about cocoa and cacao, but don’t be because I will go over the differences. I will describe a couple benefits of cacao.
A little about cacao. Cacao trees are found all over the world, but most of them are in West Africa. When the pods are ripe, they are collected and split open to reveal cacao beans covered in white pulp. The pulp is removed, the beans are fermented, dried and cleaned before processing into cacao powder. Cocoa powder is roasted at a much higher temperature than cacao where the higher heat tends to destroy many of the compounds. That is where the difference between the two is made. (1)
Cacao beans contain high levels of antioxidants (polyphenols), vitamins, minerals, and beneficial amino acids. Flavanols in cacao are thought to improve the nitric oxide levels in the blood, which enhances the function of your blood vessels. That is according to a review of 35 experiments completed in 2017. (2) When there are better functioning blood vessels, it can lead to many other health benefits.
Another benefit is that it may improve mood and symptoms of depression. That is because of the cacao’s flavanols, the conversion of tryptophan to the natural mood stabilizer serotonin, its caffeine content or the sensory pleasure of eating chocolate. Some other possible benefits are that it may be able to aid in weight control, may help people with asthma, may benefit your teeth and skin, help increase brain function, and it may have cancer protective properties. Hopefully, this educated you on some of the benefits of cacao, and you decide to implement this into your diet. I am glad there will be less guilt, so you don’t have to stress over the choice you made.
-Buy chocolate bars that have at least 85% cacao, as there is much less added sugar compared to milk chocolate
-Add a scoop of cocao powder to your whole food smoothie
