Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition involving abdominal pain and diarrhea or constipation that is thought to be caused by stress, depression, anxiety, or other issues with the digestive tract. IBS can usually be classified into 1 of 3 groups: IBS-M, IBS-D, and IBS-C. In this post, I will be talking about IBS-A, which entails IBS with alternating constipation and diarrhea.
According to the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, IBS affects 7-21% of the general population. (1) Like IBS-C, IBS-A is also thought to be from changes in the functioning of the intestines, the changes in the bacteria balance in the gut or the communication between the stomach and the brain. (1,2)
If “you” have IBS-A it is common that “you” may have lower abdominal pain and altered bowel movement, i.e, constipation, diarrhea, and inconsistent bowel movements. It is also common to have mucus in stool, the sudden urge that “you need to go”, bloating, a sensation of the bowel not emptying completely, anxiety, and depression.
REASONS “YOU” MAY HAVE IBS-A
-Food allergies and/or sensitivities.
-Infection in your intestines (small/large)
-Bacterial issues (decreased diversity in the “good” bacteria).
-A decrease or low consumption of dietary food that you get from whole foods (This can be tricky with IBS-A because but since too much soluble fiber can cause constipation and too little can cause diarrhea)
“YOUR” POSSIBLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES (3)
-Food Sensitivity Testing
-Minimize caffeine, especially “you” have more diarrhea than,
constipation( DARK CHOCOLATE HAS CAFFEINE IN IT)
-Minimize grains as they may cause gut dysbiosis, which can lead
-Minimize processed foods (IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLETELY RID THEM
FROM “YOUR” LIFE)
-Reduce stress by meditating or anything that helps “you” relax
-Eating raw foods compared to cooked food can change the fiber percentage (FUN FACT)
HIGH-DIETARY FOODS (4)
*Typically the darker the vegetable/fruit the more fiber
LOW-DIETARY FOODS (5)
