I love coffee, but it is really a love, hate relationship. The taste makes me feel good, but the pain makes me feel bad. The second I swallow a sip of it, I get a burning in my throat. I’ve tried drinking it again and again with the hope that it won’t burn. My hope loses that battle every time. I am 100% positive that there are people out there like me.
Come to find out, coffee relaxes the muscle between the stomach and esophagus (the tube that goes from the throat to the stomach). When that muscle is relaxed, it lets the stomach acid make its way up to your throat where you get the painful burn. It only makes you think what damage is being done. (1) Luckily there is a way to stop that burning from happening. STOP DRINKING COFFEE. At least that has worked best for me. I’ve tried “coffee hacks,” but the ones I tried didn’t work.
COFFEE HACKING FOR REFLUX)(2)
1)Buy low acid coffee (You may have to buy online)
2)Buy dark roast coffee (the darker the better)
3)Buy coffee that is roasted in low elevations
4)Used acid reducers like Coffee Tamer
5)Drink cold brewed coffee
6) Use egg shells in the brewing process
7)Add a dash of salt to your coffee
I think part of the reason I can’t drink coffee or caffeinated beverages anymore is because I drank so much growing up. (Whenever I got money from my paper route I would go to the store and buy candy and energy drinks.) I am assuming over all that time the muscle between my stomach and esophagus got weaker.
Like I said, the “coffee hacks for reflux” I did try didn’t work for me. That is because I am unique and my body reacts differently to coffee. Hopefully these work for you, but if not WE can continue life without coffee, as hard as that may seem. It has now been about 3 months without a sip of coffee, and I can say that I am okay without the need for coffee.
P.S. It also makes it easier to get up, and get going, when you know your mission and purpose in life. #healthcoaching4reflux #healthcoaching4anxiety #millennials
