How can coconut oil or MCT oil help my digestion?

MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil is made from coconut oil and is a beneficial saturated fatty acid. It is the fatty acid found in coconuts and coconut oil, but it may also be found in human breast milk, goat milk, cow’s milk, and even milk from other mammals.

People use MCT oil because it may have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties! (1) MCT oil has more benefits than just those: provides quick energy, improving mental clarity, and provides useful when you are on the ketogenic diet!

WHAT ARE MCT’S?

MCT oil has fatty acids that are naturally found in coconut, palm kernel oils, and dairy products. They have the ability to give energy straight to the mitochondria (powerhouse cells of the body). They don’t require any additional work to be broken down by the body. As a result, your body can use it immediately. (3)

MCT’s ARE USED IN THE KETO DIET

MCT’s are used in the keto diet because they produce instant ketones. Ketones come from excess acetyl-CoA. (5) This happens extremely fast. It is thought that ketones also help brain function, and even increase your athletic ability. Ketones have been found to be the choice of energy for your brain to use. Unlike carbs, which can raise your blood sugar, ketones can fuel your cells without effecting your blood sugar. (6) Along with how beneficial it can been for energy to your cells, it is also very easily digested.

MCT does not require bile to digest it, unlike other oils. (7) That may mean if you have any issues with your liver (where bile is produced) then you may still get the benefits of MCT oil. MCTs are also lower in calories, than other oils.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MCT’s

Medium-chain triglycerides are named simply because of the length of the chain of the “fatty acids.” There are also short-chain triglycerides (SCT’s), long-chain triglycerides (LCT’s). MCT’s contain between 6-12 carbon atoms. (3)

C6: Caproic Acid
Caproic acid has six carbon chains, making it the smallest chain of MCT’s.

C8: Caprylic Acid
Caprylic acid has eight carbon chains. Out of all the acids in MCT, this is considered one of the best sources of energy for cells (ATP) It may even help with fungal issues. ATP, or cell energy, is created quickly with C8 MCT’s. (3,9)

C10: Capric Acid
Capric acid is an MCT with ten carbon chain fatty acids, that also have antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory benefits. (10)

C12: Lauric Acid
Lauric acid is an MCT with 12 carbon chain fatty acids. C12 is the largest part of the MCT’s found in coconut oil. This is slightly different than the other acids, because the body can’t use it for “instant” cell energy. (11)
